I communicated with Jan only a few years ago. I was shocked to read this. Sad.

It was definitely a shock. I had reconnected with Jan several years ago when I retired and we met for dinner every month. She was having a hard time initially because her husband had just passed away but still was working and enjoyed going out. Then Pat Kissinger started coming to dinner with us too and one night we were waiting for her at dinner and Jan didn't show.  She had passed away, probably a heart attack and since she lived alone no one knew until she didn't show up for work and they contacted her emergency contact, another friend.  Anyway, she was a wonderful person in many ways. At her funeral we were surprised that she was very well known at the national level regarding her HIV work, which she got involved in very early in the epidemic because she was working for the Hemophilia Association when HIV began.  She set up a very successful program that focused on women who were HIV positive and their children.  She was very modest about her achievements.  We miss her a lot.
